Winter feathers and critters

The snow is flying outside, but inside where it's warm we have new roommates. Over the holidays, we welcomed six chickens to our roost! Since we started looking at farmhouses, I have been excited to raise chickens for our own eggs. Our six will hopefully start laying in June. They have grown so much already (one week in the first photo, four weeks in the second). Currently, they are living in a brooder on our porch with two red heat lamps. In the next few weeks, they will move into the barn and then outside in their own coop in the spring.

As with many old homes, the colder temperatures have also brought some unwanted visitors. We have a few mice in the basement and walls which thankfully I have not seen yet. We also had a flying squirrel on the first floor. David saw him in the mural room and then while we were watching TV he ran across the floor and climbed into our Christmas tree. Despite attempts to catch, he has been ellusive and we think he's left the building ;o).
